Description:
The KnuckleHead was produced from 1936 to 1947 and became a major milestone in the history of Harley-Davidson: as they say, all the other overhead valve motors of the company went from it.
The name Knucklehead - “knuckle-headed” or “fist-headed” - came from the shape of the valve cover of this engine, similar to the knuckles of a clenched fist. From the side, it is easy to recognize by a pair of huge "bolts" that secure the valve block cover.
They tried to put the new Knucklehead engine into production as quickly as possible, despite the fact that it was leaking oil quite heavily, mainly from under the valve cover, which was due to the complex shape of the surface, which could not be reliably sealed. However, already then Harley-Davidson prioritized style! In addition, valve springs quite often burst in it, and the rocker arms suffered from a lack of lubrication.
Patination of metal - artificial aging or giving an unusual color with a heterogeneous structure. Patination is carried out using special paint, chemicals or chemical reactions.
Patina (Italian patina), a film of various shades (from green to brown), formed on the surface of copper, bronze and brass products as a result of metal corrosion under the influence of the natural environment or as a result of patination, that is, heating or treatment with oxidizing agents. Patination of metal as a "plaque of antiquity" was first realized by the artists of ancient Rome.
