Packaging notes:

Beer is an alcoholic beverage that is produced by boiling and fermenting starches from cereal grains, most commonly malted barley, although wheat, corn, rice, and oats are also used. The grain is mashed to convert the starches in the grain into sugars, which dissolve in water to form wort. Fermentation of the wort by yeast produces ethanol and carbonation in the beer. Beer is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages in the world, the most widely consumed, and the third most popular drink after water and tea. Most modern beer is brewed with hops, which impart bitterness and other flavors to the beer and act as a natural preservative and stabilizer. Other flavorings, such as gruit, herbs, or fruits, may be included or used in place of hops. In commercial brewing, natural carbonation is often replaced by forced carbonation.

Beer is sold in bottles and cans and is commonly available on tap in pubs and bars. The brewing industry is a global business, made up of a few dominant multinational companies and many thousands of smaller producers, from brewpubs to regional breweries. Modern beer is typically around 4–6% alcohol by volume (ABV).

Some of the earliest writings mention the production and distribution of beer: the Code of Hammurabi (1750 BCE) included laws regulating it, and the Hymn to Ninkasi, a prayer to the Mesopotamian goddess of beer, contains a recipe for it. Beer is part of the culture of many peoples, and is associated with social traditions such as beer festivals, as well as events such as pub games.

History
Some believe that the flip top was implemented during the Black Plague to prevent diseased flies from getting into the beer. This is unlikely to be true, as contemporaries were unaware that flies spread disease. Instead, the prevailing belief was that it was spread through dangerous "miasmas."

The advantage of using stoneware to make steins was that molds could be used to mass-produce elaborately carved steins. Glass, on the other hand, had the advantage of being able to add an artistic touch by incorporating acid etching, staining on the glass, or even colored overlays. The advantage of porcelain was that a stein maker could use molds to make "worsted schwans," keiki that had a specific shape modeled on the object, or collecting antique and replica beer steins became a very popular hobby not only among individuals but also in museums. Beer stein production has become significant in America, but the largest beer stein manufacturer is Ceramarte in Brazil.

The most traditional beer stein production area is Kannenbäckerland in the Westerwald region of Germany. This unique German pottery region has been making beer steins for centuries and is known among collectors as the original German beer stein manufacturer.

Material
Beer steins were made primarily of pewter in many areas of Europe (mostly England), but many steins were made of glass, porcelain and silver. Steins were also known to be made of wood, ceramic and crystal.

The standard German beer stein has been made of glass for hygienic reasons since the introduction of glass steins at the Oktoberfest in 1892. Modern beer steins, with the exception of decorative or luxury versions, do not have a lid.

Beer steins (0.5 and 1 liter) are typical of beer gardens and especially Oktoberfest, where they are popular for their sturdiness. In other settings, 0.33 and 0.5 liter beer glasses are also popular.

Attempts to replace glass or clay beer mugs with plastic mugs (for safety reasons) have been met with protests, even mug burnings, and have never been successful in the long or even medium term in Germany.
