Description:
What is mercerized cotton?
Mercerized cotton was first obtained by the English industrialist John Mercer in the second half of the 18th century. Since then, the special treatment of natural cotton thread with caustic soda solutions has been called mercerization.
Strong and silky, soft and elastic, mercerized cotton resembles silk thread in appearance. Products made from this material do not fade or burn out in the sun, are pleasant to wear, and are difficult to tear or deform.
Things made from processed fiber are comfortable and environmentally friendly, have a durable color and a slightly noticeable shine that gives the fabrics nobility and charm. During the treatment, numerous small villi are removed from the surface of the cotton thread, so the fiber becomes even and smooth, like silk.
Advantages of mercerized cotton compared to regular cotton:
- The strength of the processed thread is much higher than that of standard cotton fiber.
- Products made from mercerized yarn hardly wrinkle and do not shrink at all when washed.
- Mercerized yarn can be dyed in a variety of colors. The dye lasts longer than on regular threads, does not fade in the sun and does not shed. This allows the products to retain their original appearance for several years.
- After processing, cotton fibers become silky and pleasant to the touch, acquire a noble shine.
- The material absorbs moisture well. This is a very important property of threads, since cotton is often used to make clothes that directly interact with the body, such as shirts, T-shirts, underwear.
