Edward Teach (1680 - 1718, England), nicknamed Blackbeard, was an English pirate who operated in the West Indies and on the east coast of the North American colonies of Great Britain. The life of the famous English pirate has become overgrown with so many myths and legends that it is sometimes difficult to separate truth from lies - Edward Teach also gained considerable fame due to his colorful appearance. In particular, it was the thick vegetation on his face that earned him the nickname Blackbeard.
There is a legend that Teach, in order to instill greater terror in his enemies, tied smoking objects to his hair, especially during the boarding of merchant ships. However, in reality, he was far from always bloodthirsty, and could even show mercy, leaving the crew of a captured ship on an island or providing them with a boat for evacuation.
Having founded his own pirate alliance, Edward was able to blockade the port of Charleston in North Carolina for two weeks, attacking at least 8 ships - interestingly, Teach took syphilis medicine for his crew as ransom. Then Blackbeard accidentally ran the Queen Anne's Revenge aground on a sandbank near Beaufort in North Carolina - Teach parted ways with Bonnet and went to the city of Buttown, where he again accepted the king's pardon.
Blackbeard's flagship, the famous Queen Anne's Revenge, eventually sank and was discovered only in 1996, but a large amount of treasure was not found - most likely, Teach took all the loot and sailed away with the crew on a sloop.
In the end, in a battle with the crew of the British Navy lieutenant Robert Maynard, Teach died, although he continued to fight bravely even after 5 gunshot wounds and 20 sword cuts - Blackbeard was defeated only by beheading him. According to legend, the decapitated body of Edward Teach, thrown into the sea, floated three times around the ship on which he died. Lieutenant Maynard put Blackbeard's head to the bow of his ship as a warning to other pirates. All but one of Teach's men were hanged - his assistant Israel Hands received a royal pardon thanks to his testimony against corrupt officials of North Carolina.
Despite his not very outstanding successes in life, Edward Teach became one of the symbols of pirate life, a legend and an example of an evil and crazy pirate who terrorized the Caribbean, although in fact, the shrewd and calculating Teach tried to avoid the use of force and always took care of his crew.
